時值暑假，民眾戲水活動增加，為提昇民眾水域自救能力，保障市民生命，確保戲水安全，嘉義北區扶輪社與嘉義市水上救生協會於15日假嘉義高中游泳池，針對年滿10歲至國中三年級以下學童舉行2018防溺自救營活動。
嘉義市市長涂醒哲前往開訓時對百餘名國中小學生及家長表示肯定外，並對北區扶輪社全額補助舉辦水上防溺自救營活動，表達敬佩。該活動藉由嘉義市水上救生協會翁理事長鉦欽率領20餘位教練及16位救生員指導，學生除安全開心的玩水一整天外，也學會各種仰漂、水母漂等基礎自救方法。
消防局並呼籲市民，平日除應具備防溺常識、強化水中自救技能外，戲水或游泳一定要選擇有合格救生員水域，絕不涉及危險水域；若真見有人溺水時，更應善用陸上的器具(竹竿、繩索、救生圈等)救生，儘量避免徒手展開救援，請大家共同重視防溺、做好防溺工作，使溺水憾事降至最低。
