〔記者丁偉杰／嘉市報導〕嘉義市文化資產審議委員會本月十六日通過審查，舊嘉義菸葉廠及國定古蹟舊嘉義監獄旁宿舍群內的演武場，皆登錄為歷史建築；市府表示，舊嘉義菸葉廠已獲文化部補助「嘉市影視產業計畫」經費，未來將發展成影視音基地，通過審查取得文化資產身分，有助閒置空間活化再利用。
座落於嘉市北興路的舊嘉義菸葉廠，自日治時期昭和十四年（公元一九三九年）建設完成後，便與花蓮、台中、屏東並稱四大菸葉乾燥廠，而後台灣菸葉經營由私營至專賣，菸葉廠的設備逐漸擴張。
而座落嘉市維新路的舊嘉義監獄演武場，舊時為「台南刑務所嘉義支所」的附屬建築，建築用途從最初的公共練武空間至多人合宿，再成為典獄長眷屬宿舍，多次空間機能的轉變，見證百年嘉義舊監獄多樣的生活面貌，具歷史保存價值。
