中研院學者陳昭倫並指今年6月在此海域發現第一級保育類野生動物「柴山多杯孔珊瑚」。
桃園在地聯盟等環團及地方人士認為，觀塘工業區南側與觀新藻礁保護區北側重疊；海水具流動性，於該保護區旁傾倒土方填海造陸或完工後排放廢污水，將破壞野生動植物棲息環境，第三天然氣接收站應該尋求替代方案。（記者劉力仁）
