〔記者林欣漢、俞肇福/花蓮報導〕花蓮縣昨天深夜發生芮氏規模6的強震，有逾萬人追蹤的臉書粉絲專頁「台灣地震預測研究所」上午發文表示：「根據最新地磁訊號，花蓮縣秀林鄉訊號變密。」指可能還有更大的主震還未到來，貼文引發人心惶惶。
根據氣象法規定，擅自發布氣象、地震、海象警報拒不停止者，可處20萬元以上、100萬元以下罰鍰，並得按次處罰；中央氣象局地震測報中心曾指出，地震預測內容需包含地震規模、發生地點、時間、各地震度，其中時間誤差需在1小時內；目前網傳這些言論僅視為個人猜測意見，無法裁罰。
不過，數年前曾有人自稱根據易經推算，預言有大地震，結果被以涉嫌違反社會秩序維護法裁罰。氣象局強調，地震科學上是採觀測，而非預測，且地震預測須有嚴謹定義，請民眾勿隨意聽信網路預測。
