〔記者丁偉杰／嘉市報導〕嘉義市公園街一間二樓民宅日前發生暗夜火警，一對八旬老夫妻嗆傷被救出送醫，不幸先後不治過世，警消調查，民宅雖有裝設住宅用火災警報器，但老夫妻第一時間未聽到警報，錯失逃生機會，消防局長蘇耀星昨說，全市近五年已有十八起災例，因裝設住警器而使民眾逃生成功，建議長者、行動不便等避難弱勢者，在房間門口增設住警器，爭取逃生時間。
蘇耀星說，住家裝住警器用來偵測火災發生前或發生時產生的濃煙，一般都會裝設在樓梯間或走道處，有人習慣睡覺關房門，因此建議房間門口要增設住警器，萬一深夜或凌晨發生火災，可及時發揮警示效果。
嘉市至今設置率達六成八，裝置戶數三萬二千八百餘戶，仍有部分民眾不希望消防人員進到住家，懷疑是詐騙集團，或因住警器更換電池問題，為省麻煩而拆下不使用。
蘇耀星表示，民眾如有疑慮，會透過里鄰長協助裝設，如有更換電池等問題，可洽詢轄區消防分隊。
