南寮派出所警員李謙承、鄭宇韶、謝宗興、陳宜享傍晚接獲勤務中心通報，得知陳姓男子在新竹市舊港橋自殺，然而經前往巡邏，卻未發現，所長田士和決定擴大範圍搜救。
18點左右，李謙承於竹北白地橋下堤防，果然發現陳男汽車，且車門上鎖，經打開車門，發現陳男在車上燒炭自殺，神智不清，立即通知救護車救人，同時通知陳男家人，陳男經救護車送醫，已無大礙。
