水林鄉因環境及氣候適宜，向來以生產優質地瓜聞名，但現在田間也出現新的景色，部分農田在夏季開滿黃色的花海，花叢間還可以看到稚嫩像牛角的秋葵，張姓農民記得3、4年前便有農民引進秋葵栽種，當時僅考量這種作物易於照顧且病蟲害少，後來得知秋葵是極佳養生食材，價格也相當穩定，栽種的農民愈來愈多。
林姓農民表示，栽種秋葵最大好處在於食用範圍廣泛，不但能夠直接炒或川燙食用，種子則可烘焙成咖啡豆替代品，又沒有咖啡因，不會造成睡眠障礙，潛在的商機相當大。
