噶瑪蘭族是宜蘭的平埔族，全盛時期聚落數超過七十個；主要分布壯圍、五結、蘇澳等地，是早期漢人未進入宜蘭開墾前，蘭陽平原主要的生活族群，目前全台噶瑪蘭人數約一千七百多人。
一七九六年吳沙率領漢人進入宜蘭開墾，迫使噶瑪蘭人被同化或遷移至花蓮、台東等地；一九二○年代，最後一批噶瑪蘭族南遷，留在宜蘭的族人幾乎漢化，隱身閩南人社群。
蘭陽博物館長陳碧琳說，目前全台能夠從考古遺址文物，追溯到現存的原住民文化，也僅噶瑪蘭族，如漢本遺址、淇武蘭遺址，都是噶瑪蘭文化見證，噶瑪蘭人會造船、航行，遺址內也有捕鯨工具，證明噶瑪蘭族文化是面向全球。（記者張議晨）
