林務局嘉義林管處技士蕭明學表示，神木在1998年6月放倒後，樹幹逐漸腐朽，因生長環境潮溼，昆蟲帶來的樹木種子，常在腐爛的樹幹上的青苔處發芽、成長。
據蕭明學觀察，傾倒神木生長的植物為蕨類，先前也有「玉山杜鵑」在此發芽，但因腐殖質不夠，除非移植，否則樹苗恐都無法繼續生長。
